If you’ll be spending time away from your looms this summer, consider carrying along a small foam disk so you (or a child in search of something fun to do) can learn to make kumihimo braids.

The basics of this traditional Japanese technique are easy to grasp. In it, you exchange threads (usually eight or more) around that disk in a sequence of movements that can range from simple to complex. The sequence of movements determines the shape of the finished cord, which can be round, square, flat, or other shapes. Color placement works alongside the movements to create patterns.

The braids themselves have myriad uses: key fobs, eyeglass cords, basket handles, jewelry, and components of artwork, to name just a few. Those formerly bored children can use them as leashes for favorite stuffed animals or plastic dinosaurs, or they can combine a colorful group into a crazy wig.

Ready to give it a try? In this FREE video introducing you to Kumihimo Basics, Angela K. Schneider guides you through the process of creating a simple braid. She covers materials as well as how to read kumihimo instructions. She’ll get you started braiding with ease.
