There are very few times in my life I’ve wished I had a loom with more than 8 shafts. One of those times was when I first saw Nancy Dunlap’s astoundingly beautiful Majestic Royal Scarf from the November/December 2018 Handwoven. Silvery purple huck lace combined with a deep royal purple twill band—what’s not to love? And if, like me, you don’t have 16 shafts, you can weave a huck-lace-only version of the scarf with just 8 shafts. Here’s what Nancy has to say about her design:

Designer Nancy Dunlap’s Statement
For this project, I decided to combine huck lace with a turned twill draft. Huck lace uses warp and weft floats to create lace patterns on a plain-weave background. Warp floats on the front of the cloth create weft floats on the back, and vice versa. When the cloth is off the loom, the warp floats bunch together as vertical bundles and the weft floats bunch together in horizontal bundles, creating a lacy effect.
Using the same color for warp and weft allows the lace pattern to show clearly, but to create a bit of color interest, I added navy, black, and gold to the centered warpwise twill stripe.
Whether you weave this scarf on 16 shafts or try the huck-only version on 8, I hope you love this scarf as much as I do!
