LoginAfter designing her Floral Bouquet Napkins for the Summer 2025 issue of Handwoven, Malynda Allen decided to weave some towels on the same warp. Her goal was to weave towels that coordinated with the napkins rather than matching them—she wanted to try options for patterning, borders, colors, and fibers.
Her project turned into a bit of a quest. First, she considered dimensions for her towels—keeping in mind both the size of the pattern repeat and the existing border. That led her back to her weaving software, where she developed an alternative border.
She tried it out on the loom, and the results led her down other paths. As she wove each towel, she made small changes in the colors and the border, which led her to changes in the next towel she wove. This is where the fun of playing at the loom comes in! Not all of her experiments ended up working, but they gave her ideas to explore in the future.
As you weave these towels, Malynda encourages you to design your own borders for them—for a start, change up the colors, or use more or fewer rows of Brooks bouquet.
