Many of us grew up getting and giving little boxes of Conversation Hearts on Valentine’s Day made by the New England Confectionery Company (Necco), so it was worrisome when I learned that the Necco hearts wouldn’t be available this year. How would we all continue weaving without being able to read and eat our way through the days leading up to and following Feb. 14? Thankfully, Brach sells similar hearts, so that’s a backup plan. Also, the Spangler Candy Company, which purchased Necco in July, will be selling the original Conversation Hearts next year. Phew, I was wondering how I’d be able to keep up my energy for weaving over Presidents’ Day weekend this year and in the future.

Some of the phrases on the hearts were considered classic—such “BE MINE” and “KISS ME”—but Necco regularly added new phrases to the list. The new phrases were based on yearly themes such as sports “LOVE MY TEAM” (added in 2005) or fashion “TRES CHIC” (2002). In 1998, the theme was technology, so one of the phrases was “FAX ME,” which I think could now be replaced with “FRIEND ME” or, perhaps, “I’M TWEET ON YOU.”

Spangler officials haven’t asked me to help, but if they do, I’m going to propose weaving for the next annual theme. Here’s my list for 2020:

- LOOM CRUSH - U SLEY ME! - A PERFECT SETT - I ♥ WEAVING - TWILL ME - MY HONEYCOMB - DOBBY LOVE - SWEET SPOT - I REED YOU

Join me in proposing a weaving theme for Conversation Hearts in 2020. Who knows? Spangler Candy Company might be grateful, and they might even consider them classics!

Weave well,

Susan
