Eileen Lee‘s Mosaic Tiles Scarf design was inspired by an ad. We printed a version woven in springlike colors in Handwoven Spring 2025. Subscribers can enjoy this alternate version using richer autumnal colors as a bonus project—Handwoven editors

Autumnal Mosaic Tiles Scarf by Eileen Lee

Several years ago, I was quite taken by a beautiful scarf in a Treenway Silks advertisement I saw in a copy of Handwoven. I cut out the ad and put it on a bulletin board in my studio. Someday, I thought, I’ll weave something similar.

I finally decided it was time to figure out a draft for that project. Looking closely at the ad, I saw that I would be weaving a grid of squares. Each square would have a circular design in the center, and the squares themselves needed to be separated by narrow dark borders in both weft and warp.

After some searching, I found a draft on handweaving.net that I thought would work. I put it into Fiberworks, expanded it to be six units wide, and added a dark pick around each unit. I chose a set of bright springlike colors for the scarf that was included in the Spring 2025 issue of Handwoven.

But my personal color preference tends toward an autumnal palette, so that’s the version you see here. I hope you’ll give one or the other a try!
