Ask Madelyn: Sett

What's the best way to sley a reed when your optimal sett is 11?

Hi Madelyn!

I find that some yarn I want to use seems to look best at 11 epi –– by the way, thanks for the sett thing from Halcyon in the current issue –– and I wonder whether I should add a thread to a 10 epi reed or skip one space in a 12 epi reed to arrive at 11 epi.  Or maybe it doesn't matter which I do...

Cordially,

Hi Judith. Good question, and I'd say neither. It's not really good to make a distribution that is so disproportionate in that one dent (the one with more or the one with fewer). My guess is that a better move would be to sley an 8-dent reed 2-1-1-2-1-1-2-1; 2-1-1-2-1-1-2-1, etc. That way, the extras are more evenly distributed. Otherwise, a noticeable warp stripe will occur where the threads are more crowded.

Let me know if you try it!

Thanks for writing,

Madelyn
